William Chalmers Haden Bill of 583 Steele Street, Asheboro, NC died Monday, December 3, 2007 at Randolph Hospital. Bill was born February 23, 1926 in Salisbury, NC, the son of John Nelson Haden and Ethel Mae Armfield Haden, who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, the former Carolyn Frances Fritts, of the home, and to whom he was married for 55 years; also, two sons, Dr. William C. Haden, Jr. and wife, Susan Wyman Haden, and Dr. Nelson A. Haden and wife, Joy Haden; eight grandchildren, namely, Adam Wyman Thomas, Laura Thomas Heyda, William Fritts Haden, Carolyn Carrie Carson Haden, Virginia Ginny Susan Haden, Michael Chalmers Haden, Hank Perry, and Katie Perry; and one great granddaughter, Sara Heyda. He is also survived by a sister, Ethel Haden White and her husband Edmund White. He is also survived by his devoted and beloved friend, Clarence Maxwell Max Allen. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Nelson Haden, Jr. who died on an airplane flight from London, England during World War II, and Edward Bud Haden. Both brothers served their country in World War II. Bill graduated from Boyden High School, Salisbury, NC and received his B.S. degree from Catawba College. He served his country during the Korean War where he was wounded, and later received the Purple Heart. He was a member of both the Salisbury and Asheboro Lions Club, and was awarded the Lion of the Year for both clubs, and received the Melvin Jones Fellow honor while a member of the Asheboro Lions Club. He was active in scouting and served as Scoutmaster for Troop 525 for many years during the 60's. During the 60's he had the pleasure of serving as a leader for many area scouts who attended the National Jamboree in Idaho. He retired after serving as a counselor for the NC Vocational Rehabilitation Department, serving those students in the City of Asheboro, and Randolph County Schools with special problems. He loved working with these students. For many years, he enjoyed fishing, playing golf, attending auction sales, and flea markets, and collecting walking canes and ball caps. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Asheboro, NC since 1963, he served as an Elder and Superintendent of the Church School, and attended the Westminster Sunday School Class. Bill was a very devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His humor and laughter will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends, Wednesday, December 5, 2007 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, NC. The funeral service will be Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel at 11 o'clock a.m. with the Rev. Russ Ward and the Rev. Connie Weaver officiating. Interment with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard will follow in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Salisbury, NC. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009, First Presbyterian Church, 420 W. Walker Avenue, Asheboro, NC 27203 or to the donors preference. The family extends special thanks to the following: the Nursing Staff serving on the third floor of Randolph Hospital, and especially serving the patient in Room 348; to the palliative care of Hospice of Randolph-the nurses as well as the chaplains; the chaplains serving Randolph Hospital. Also, special thanks to Angel Turner, Brandi Baldwin, and Jane Graves, who assisted so lovingly with his care this past year. To the Ministers at our church, the Rev. Ward and the Rev. Weaver, your prayers were appreciated.
