Vernie "Cottontop" Monroe Thomas

Vernie “Cottontop” Monroe Thomas, age 83, of Asheboro passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026 at the Randolph Hospice House surrounded by his family.

Mr. Thomas was born in Asheboro on June 17, 1942. He was later adopted by Herman and Emma Wright Thomas. He was employed as a truck driver for 40 years. Vernie was a very giving gentleman who loved helping people. He could build and repair anything.

In addition to his parents, Vernie was preceded in death by his sister, Shelby Brown and brothers, Tom Lethco and Harold Lethco.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pat Thomas; children, Chris Lewis (Brent), Sheila Cole (Jeff), and Danny Thomas (Joy); grandchildren, Meghan Davis (Trent), Sarah Sealey (Luke), Haylee Cole (Jonathan), Ethan Cole (Candace), Jacob Thomas (Sarah), Ciara Thomas Linnens (Branson), Savannah Thomas Jones (Darius), and Jonah Thomas (Marie); great grandchildren, Blake, Ayden, Zane, Thatcher, Isaac, Elias, Charlie, and one on the way; sister, Hilda Sanders (Boots); and brother-in-law, Winfred Brown.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Randolph Hospice house. 446 Vision Dr, Asheboro, NC 27203. The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at the Randolph Hospice house for their amazing care and love that they showed to Vernie and the family.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 11, 2026 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026 at 2:00 pm at the Glenn “Mac” Pugh Chapel with Rev. Arnold Luther and Rev. Wyatt Hoogkamp officiating. Burial will be held in Randolph Memorial Park.
