Velma Deloris Auman Saunders (“DeeDee”), age 94 of Troy, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 17th, 2026, with family by her side.
Deloris was born in Seagrove, NC on May 8th, 1932, to the late Theodore Auman and Mattie Nichols Auman. In 1950, she graduated from Seagrove High School, where she participated in the 4H club and Glee club, as well as playing basketball all four years. She was voted “Best Sport” for her senior class superlative. Deloris was married to the love of her life, Alfred Burns Saunders, for 72 years. Together, they made a home in Troy where they raised their five children and created many special memories.
Deedee was known for her spunky and outgoing personality. She had many hobbies, including cooking, gardening, sewing, fishing, dancing and playing cards. She enjoyed everything about the beach, particularly looking for shark teeth and seashells. She loved spending time with her big family, including going on trips to Topsail Island, Atlanta Braves baseball games, cruises, and many other family outings. Deloris was also a member of Ophir Methodist Church.
Deloris is survived by her sons: Neil Saunders and Phillip Saunders (Debbie); daughter: Vickie S. Maness; grandchildren: Chris Davenport (Cindy), David Davenport (Danelle), Michael Davenport (Renee), Kevin Saunders (Erica), Pam Fellows, Jessica Parsons (Kevin), Ryan Saunders (Lynsay) and Nicole Maness; great-grandchildren: Kerstin, Kendall, Nathan, Alfred, Charlie, JD, Bri, Brinley, Kailey, Wyatt, Waylon, Weston, Ariana, Lily, Dawson, Eli, Finley; great-great-grandchildren: Kaysen, Maci. She is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Saunders; son, Ken Saunders; and daughter, Gail S. Davenport.
The family is grateful for the love and support provided throughout the years by special family friends, Crystal Bowden and Lindsey McGuirt.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 20th, 2026, at Ophir Methodist Church, starting at 11:30AM with Officiant Rev. Travis McGuirt. Visitation will begin 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
