Vann Herbert Gales, affectionately known as “Dinkie,” was born in Randolph County, North Carolina, to the late George and Mary Louise Gales. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1965 and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps beginning in 1968.
Dinkie was rooted in faith from an early age, attending St. Stephen AME Church and later becoming a dedicated member of Rock Creek AME Church. He was known for his kind spirit, warm smile, and zest for life. Dinkie had a lifelong passion for cars, a love for classic Westerns, and was an enthusiastic Tar Heel fan. NASCAR Sundays were a favorite pastime he deeply enjoyed.
He dedicated 39 years of hard work to Beaman Corporation in Liberty, NC, where he remained until his retirement.
Dinkie was preceded in death by four brothers: Harveston Gales, Peter Gales (Charlene), Fray Gales (Marjorie), and John Gales; and four sisters: Nancy Jeffries, Josephine Tinnin, Mattie Gales Carter, and Ella Gales.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Queenie Gales of Asheboro; three sons: Leslie Greene of Asheboro, Douglas Greene of Houston, TX, and Keith Greene (Regina) of Hillsborough, NC; one stepson, Shaheed Mujaahid of Charlotte, NC; one brother, George Gales (Linda) of Greensboro; and three sisters: Delois Martin of Snow Camp, Shelby Jean Jeffries of Burlington, and Mamie Outlaw (John) of Maryland.
Dinkie is also survived by four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
