Ruby Mae Hopkins Baker

Ruby Mae Hopkins Baker, age 89 of Asheboro, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2026 at the Randolph Hospice House.

Ruby was born June 10, 1937 in Alamance County, NC to John and Leter Martindale Hopkins. Ruby was one of eight children and had the best sense of humor. She worked and retired from sales with Belk after 23 years of service. Ruby loved her flowers. She truly had a green thumb and could always find room for “just one more” flower in her yard. Ruby loved to read, play bingo, and thoroughly enjoyed her weekly trip to the beauty parlor. Ruby was a member at Charlotte United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. If you spent much time with Ruby, you knew what a great cook she was. She was known for her coconut cake, butter beans and corn, and her vegetable beef soup. In addition to her parents, Ruby is preceded in death by her husband, Jim Baker; great grandson, Logan Bell; 5 brothers, and 2 sisters.

Ruby is survived by her children, Tony Small (Gloria) of Trinity, Rick Small (Robin) of Asheboro, Curtis Small of Trinity, and Kaye Herron (Lee) of Trinity; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 31, 2026 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, NC 27203. Ruby’s funeral service will take place in the Glenn “Mac” Pugh Chapel at the funeral home on Saturday, August 01, 2026 at 2:00pm with Pastor David Hopkins and Rev. Marian Dabbs officiating. Burial will follow the service at Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Brookdale Assisted Living and Hospice of Randolph for the excellent care and love they provided for Ruby.
