Robert Lyle Stover, Jr., age 73 of Asheboro, N.C. passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Monday, April 17, 2023, with family by his side. His health had been declining for the past two years.
Robert was born on December 9, 1949, in Siler City, N.C. to Robert Lyle Stover, Sr. and Marie Ellis Stover. He was a 1968 graduate of Jordan Matthews High School where he played football and baseball. Robert retired from Georgia Pacific in Asheboro as HR Manager after 40 years of service. After retirement, he delivered medicine to group homes for Central Carolina Pharmaceutical Services for twelve years and was called the “Medicine Man” by patients. As a young man he coached Pony League baseball in Chatham County and Asheboro. Later he dropped down to Mustang League to coach his son Rob all the way through Colt League. He loved baseball and was a great influence on many of the players he coached. He especially enjoyed coaching his grandson, Lincon. Robert also loved playing basketball and was known to be a very aggressive player receiving a broken nose twice.
He also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed pulling pranks on others, especially his wife Nancy. Robert loved his family unconditionally and would do everything in his power to show his love and how proud he was of them. He was the best husband, dad, papa, friend, coach, fishing partner, and hunting partner our family could ever ask for. His grandchildren made his face light up and he was a very proud Papa. He was blessed with two children and four grandchildren.
Robert was a member of Central Wesleyan Church (a campus of Foster Street Wesleyan Church). He was not ashamed of his love for Jesus and loved sharing his faith. He loved attending church and was honored to serve as usher. His faith and trust in God helped him through some very difficult days as his health declined. We will forever have a hole in our hearts but know he is now healed and at peace. This is not goodbye but so long until we meet again. We know he will be waiting to greet us in heaven someday.
Robert is survived by his loving wife Nancy of 54 years who was his high school sweetheart. He is also survived by his beloved children, Sherri (Ralph) and Rob (Valerie); and precious grandchildren, Haley, Landon, Lincon, and Larkin; sisters, Nancy Robards of Pawley’s Island, S.C., Martha Stover of Broadway, N.C.; brothers, Danny Stover (Wanda) of Bear Creek, Tommy Stover (Shirley) of Greenville, T.N.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 21, 2023, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 1:00 pm at Foster Street Wesleyan Church, 214 Foster Street, Asheboro with Rev. Charles Moses and Rev. Michael Jernigan, and Rev.
