Richard Carles Shaw, 77, of Asheboro, passed away Friday, December 26, 2025, at White Oak Manor in Charlotte. He was born December 25, 1948, to Glade Matthews and Ethel Lee Shaw.
Richard was a proud veteran of the United States Army. Upon his return from service, he told the love of his life, Mildred, that he was going to marry her—a promise he kept for 54 beautiful years. Richard was a man of many simple pleasures; he was an avid fisherman, enjoyed tinkering around the house, and loved spending time sitting on his front porch.
Known for his great sense of humor and generous heart, Richard loved to cook for anyone and everyone. It was often said that if you left his house hungry, it was your own fault. He was a devoted father who constantly looked out for his daughter, often bringing her food at all hours to make sure she was well-fed. Above all, Richard loved his family and cherished his role as a "Pawpaw."
Richard is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sherri Shaw.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mildred Shaw; daughter, Carla Greene (Maurice)of Greensboro; grandsons, Hayden Greene and Christian Greene; and his siblings, Pamela Nettles of Franklinville, Brenda Whitaker (Robert) of Carthage, Regina Matthews-Johnson (Larry) of Carthage, and Ather Matthews (Keisha) of Carthage. He also leaves behind a host of other relatives, family, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 2, 2026, from 1:00 – 1:45 PM at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro. The Memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM in the Glenn “Mac” Pugh Chapel with honors.
