Mary Hill

Mary Luke Saunders Hill, age 96, of Asheboro passed away on May 22, 2026 at the Randolph Hospice House.

Mrs. Hill was born in Randolph County on September 11, 1929 and was a 1947 graduate of Farmer School. Mary was a member of Hopewell Friends Meeting. She was formerly employed in the hosiery industry and at the Belk Thrift Store. Mary’s favorite job was babysitting her only grandson, Jason from the time he was eight months old until he started kindergarten. That special ‘job’ prepared her to lovingly serve as a teacher for the two-year-olds at Neighbors Grove Wesleyan Church Preschool. Mary loved tending her flowers and pulling weeds.

Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Lois S. Shaw, her husband of 77 years, John J. Hill, and her brothers, Harold Shaw and wife Joann and Gene Shaw.

She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Smith (Frank) of Denton; grandson, Jason F. Smith (LeAnn); sisters, Hilda Hester, Judith Surratt, and Shirley Lambeth; sisters-in-law, Margaret H. Hogan (Thurman) and Pat Shaw; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 28, 2026 from 1:00-1:45 pm at Hopewell Friends Meeting. Funeral services will follow on Thursday at 2:00 pm at the church with Rev. Ricky Sessoms officiating. Entombment will be held in the church cemetery.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Mary’s sitters, Jackson, Shelley, Michelle, Tania, Linda, Jackcine, and Donnie for their loving care and compassion.
