Martha Carolyn McGill
November 24, 1937 – June 21, 2023

Martha Carolyn McGill, 85, loving wife of the late Clarence Marvin McGill, devoted mother and grandmother, passed peacefully on June 21, 2023.

She began what would become her career as a hairdresser at the young age of fourteen. When she was older, she took a bus from Asheboro to Greensboro to attend beauty school where she completed courses to become a licensed Cosmetologist. After working several years as a professional beautician, Martha became a business owner and operated her own beauty salon in Asheboro. It was during this time that she met and married Clarence, her husband of nearly 34 years. In addition to owning and operating Asheboro Coach Company later known as Carolina American Tours, they opened a retail clothing store adjacent to her salon, Darlyn Fashions. She enjoyed organizing tours and traveling with her husband.

Martha was a loving mother and grandmother who always made holidays, birthdays and other occasions uniquely special. Christmas was her favorite holiday, decorating, cooking and baking all the family’s beloved dishes. Being a bit of a perfectionist in the kitchen, especially when baking, if a pound cake had what she called a “sad spot”, she would attempt to throw it out but those of us who loved those cakes would insist on eating it much to her chagrin. She also enjoyed gatherings with family and friends often hosting large groups in her home or around the pool.

She loved working in the yard, flowers, butterflies, birds and dogs. Martha had a green thumb and could often be found digging in the dirt planting flowers and arranging beautiful hanging baskets. She had a passion for butterflies so butterfly bushes as well as bird feeders were placed where they could be enjoyed. Martha loved dogs, especially her poodles, that she spoiled shamelessly.

She is survived by her children, daughter Diana Lynch of Greensboro and son Ron Cook (Luz) of Winston Salem, step daughters, Rhonda Routh (Steve) of Franklinville and Phyllis Phillips (Dwight) of Asheboro, grandchildren Keana Massey (David), Derek Routh, Benjamin Routh, Travis Phillips, Mandy Jones, Antoinette Villanueva, Josh McAlister, Bryan Villanueva and Shane Burrow, great grandchildren Jaxson, Emmali, Addisyn, Samuel, Dalton, Noah, Nathan, Adaline and Scarlett, brother Foy Lee West (Beth) of Asheboro, sister Gayenelle Gray (Bob) of Charlotte, nephews Keith West and Rob Gray as well as many other beloved family members. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her mother, Virgie West.

Visitation will be held at 1:00pm, Saturday, June 24th at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave, Asheboro followed by a service at 2:00pm in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dr. Jason Harvey, College Place United Methodist Church of Greensboro officiating.
