Margaret "Peggy" Huntley Bossong

November 20, 1937 — October 29, 2025

Asheboro

Margaret (“Peggy”) Huntley Bossong passed away peacefully in her home on October 29, 2025, just shy of her 88th birthday.

Peggy was born on November 20, 1937, in Wadesboro, NC, to the late Margaret Redwine Huntley and Fulton Allen Huntley. She enjoyed an idyllic childhood, surrounded by her sisters, Leslie and Sarah, and later her first cousin Nancy Hodges, and many other close family members. Upon graduating from Wadesboro High School, she attended Salem College where she graduated in 1960. While at Salem, she was introduced to a handsome young man, Joe Bossong, whom she later married in 1961. She then moved to Asheboro to begin their life together. They started their family on Westmont Circle, later moving to Lexington Road, with their three boys, Joe Jr., Huntley, and Julian.

Peggy’s priority was her family. She enjoyed supporting her boys at school and in extracurricular activities. Peggy volunteered as the school nurse and helped tutor at McCrary Elementary School. She served as a Cub Scout leader for six years with Troop 525 (and mother to three Eagle Scouts). She was her family’s biggest advocate, instilling in them a spirit to do your best, never complain, love everyone and to always do the right thing, even when no one is looking. Peggy always put others first, no matter the circumstance. She lived her life with grace, humility, unconditional love, and a wonderful sense of humor.

Peggy’s faith was a center point in her life. She was a long-time parishioner and active member of First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, served on the Altar Guild, the Staff Parish Committee and chaired the Parsonage Committee.

She was a former President of the Asheboro Public Library Foundation Board of Directors. She served on the Board of Directors of the Historical Book Club of North Carolina and was also an active member and former President of the Sorosis Book Club in Asheboro. She was an excellent bridge player and was often the winner of her Monday afternoon bridge games.

Peggy had an avid interest in history and historic preservation. She served two terms on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Museum of History Associates in Raleigh, NC. She was also an active member of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the state of North Carolina, where she served as Chairman of The Guilford Committee. She was elected to be a Regent of Gunston Hall, where she would later be selected as Chairman of the Board of Regents. In 2010, Peggy’s name was placed on the Roll of Honor for The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America.

She enjoyed gardening and her home was filled with plants and flowers regardless of the season. Many of the plants in her yard came from her family home and brought her great pleasure. Entertaining her family, friends as well as hosting community events in her home were always a joy for Peggy and Joe. Her winsome personality, optimism and sense of humor attracted many friends throughout her life.

In addition to her parents, Peggy is preceded in death by her husband of almost 57 years, Joseph Culverhouse Bossong. She is survived by their three children, Joseph Culverhouse Bossong Jr., Fulton Huntley Bossong and his wife, Lilly, Julian Redwine Bossong and his wife, Mary; her six grandchildren, Campbell, Billy, Fully, Frank, Ted, and Sallie, who lovingly referred to her as “Pay”. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Leslie Huntley and Sarah Huntley Kemm, her brother-in-law, Charles Julian Bossong, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Robyn Roberts, Ivy Seabolt, Lily Hathaway, Donna Wright, and Helen Wicker, for their love and devotion in caring for Peggy in her final days.
