Lowell Thomas (Tom) Snead
Early on Saturday October 12th, Tom died peacefully and went to be with his savior. Our faith in Jesus comforts us with the assurance that we will see him again in heaven. Born and raised in Eden, North Carolina, Tom was the only child of Claud and Mary Snead. After graduating from NC State, Tom went to work for Standard Oil Company in New Jersey, where he married Kathleen McDonald, his wife of 64 years and they raised their two daughters in Colts Neck, NJ. As Standard Oil became ESSO and then EXXON, Tom remained at the Bayonne/Bayway facility until his retirement in 1992, becoming a senior leader at the refinery and in the shipping department. A lifetime Cubs fan, Tom enjoyed spring training baseball trips to FL, and Kathleen and he would often take baseball bus tours around the country. An avid golfer, he played with church friends and as part of a golf league. Tom was proud of his lifetime membership of First Baptist Church-in his hometown of Eden NC, Elizabeth and Red Bank in NJ, and Asheboro NC. He was an active member of his churches, acting as deacon, moderator and Sunday School teacher, sought out for his business savvy, common sense, and humor. Southern Gospel music was a passion of Tom’s, and he would often travel to see gospel groups. A lover of cats, Tom and family had many over the years.
In addition to his wife, Kathleen, Tom is survived by his daughters, Melanie (Charlie) Wahlquist and Tracey (Kevin) McLaughlin and his cat, Chessie.
A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the First Baptist Church, 133 N Church St., Asheboro, NC. Visitation will be from 10:30 until service time in the church sanctuary.
The family would like to say a special thanks to Crossroads Retirement Community for their care of Tom during his final weeks, and to Randolph Hospice House for ensuring that Tom’s final hours were peaceful and comfortable.
