Lester Sam Haywood, age 70, of Mt. Gilead, NC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, West End, NC.

Lester was born on January 15, 1956, in Montgomery County, NC to the late Edgar Wilson Haywood and the late Maureen S. Frix Haywood. He was self-employed as a handyman. Lester was a happy, go-lucky guy who loved being outdoors and enjoyed life. He loved repairing bicycles for underprivileged children for Christmas presents. He enjoyed trips to the beach and loved his whole family. He also loved making grapevines. He was always with his best friend, his canine companion "Wolfie".

Lester is survived by his wife, Charlena Denise Haywood of the home; one stepson, Anthony Wayne Sessoms (Roseanna) of Star; four step grandchildren and one great grandchild; five nephews, three nieces, twelve great nephews/nieces. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristie Welch, sisters Leona Hancock, Linda Casteen, and Shirley Ann Haywood and one brother, Larry Haywood.

Services for Lester will be held at a later date.
