Kenneth C. Ziegfeld of Asheboro, NC, formerly of Punta Gorda, FL, Alexandria, VA, and Baltimore, MD, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. He was an ordained elder and member of Burnt Store Presbyterian Church, Punta Gorda, FL.Ken was born in Baltimore, MD, April 15, 1922. At age 19 he enlisted in the US Coast Guard, transferred to the Navy's V-5 NavCad Program receiving his wings in 1944 at Pensacola, FL, and received a commission in the US Coast Guard Reserve flying submarine patrol and air-sea rescue missions in WWII. After discharge Ken worked for Maryland Drydock & Shipbuilding in Baltimore, MD, prior to returning to aviation as an Air Traffic Controller at Washington (DC) Center/National Airport. Among his assignments at FAA Headquarters was the liaison with the CIA in the operation of the USAF SR-71 super-sonic reconnaissance aircraft. Ken retired from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 1978. He also retired as a Commander in the US Coast Guard Reserve participating in the flight program with the Naval Air Reserve Training Units at Anacostia Naval Air Station and Andrews Air Force Base. During his years in Alexandria, VA, he sang with the Alexandria Harmonizers and helped organize and was a charter member of the Charlotte County (FL) Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. He sang with the Sun Coast Chorus (FL) and was a member of several quartets-The HARBOR BUOYS, TOAST TO HARMONY and UPBEAT FOUR. Ken was also very artistic and used his many talents to help others. Ken's outstanding love and devotion to his wife of 64 years, Patricia Heath Ziegfeld, was an example for his family and friends. He also leaves a daughter, Patti McCutchen (Asheboro), and a son, Ken Ziegfeld and his wife Debbie (Fayetteville, GA); grandchildren Scott McCutchen and wife Leslie (Randleman, NC), Tim McCutchen and wife Kasey (Greensboro, NC), Julie McCutchen Beam and husband Scott (Broken Arrow, OK), Heather Ziegfeld (Fayetteville, GA), Ashley Ziegfeld (Fayetteville, GA), and great-grandchildren Ethan McCutchen, Eli McCutchen, Erin McCutchen (all of Randleman, NC), and Addison Beam (Broken Arrow, OK). Also surviving are his sister Shirley Smith and husband Jack (Bel Air, MD) and sister-in-law Virginia Heath (Baltimore, MD) and many other family members and friends who will miss his weekly calls to check on them.A Celebration of Life memorial service will be Saturday, February 21, 3:00 pm, at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, NC, with Chaplin Timothy Pheagin officating. Burial will be at a later date in Punta Gorda, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Randolph Pregnancy Care Center, 530 South Cox Street, Asheboro, NC 27203.
