Johnny William Widner, age 83, of Asheboro died Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Woodland Hill Care & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.
Mr. Widner was born March 22, 1933 in Abingdon, VA the son of Ace and Minnie Murray Widner.
Johnny served in the US Navy during the Korean Era and after discharge worked with Cone Mills. He later opened The Groovy Club, in Asheboro, which he ran for 25 years. He enjoyed golfing, the beach and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Johnny was a man of compassion, love. and kindness, except, of course, if you caused trouble at the Groovy Club in which he held high regard for all of his patrons and life-long friends. He would do anything for anyone for $1.99, which we all believe was a bargain. The love of coffee endured throughout his life, it may have been his only source of hydration. Quick with a shake of a hand, a witty joke, or a patented "slang" saying was his greeting of choice. I still never knew whether it was a yes or a no when he answered "Has a cat got a tail in a room full of rocking chairs?!?" From his golden gloves to his golden heart his memory will be cherished forever.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years: Irene Steagall Widner; daughter and her husband: Meah and Marty Hurley of Asheboro, NC; daughter: Debrah Gardner of Asheboro, NC; son and his wife: Johnny, Jr. and Kimberly Widner of High Point, NC; son: Rocky William Widner of Sacramento, CA; sister: Bonnie Elliott of Galax, VA; sister and her husband: Wanda and Junior Eads of Winston- Salem, NC; sister and her husband: Betty and Larry Draper of Galax, VA; brother: Dick Widner of Fries, VA; brother and his wife: Billy and Elaine Widner of Galax, VA; grandchildren, Mikel, Matthew Widner and Meah "Gini" McDaniel, Tonya Hylton; Kiesha Barker, Cole Kellner, Riis Widner; great grandchildren: Samantha, Jeffrey and Trevor Gardner, Destiny Cole, Dylan McDaniel and great-great grandchild: Leah Grace Dunn
