Joe Reid Covington, Jr., age 79, of Asheboro passed away on October 6, 2024 at Cross Road Retirement Community.
Mr. Covington was born in Winston-Salem, NC on November 22, 1944 to Reid and Margaret Fogleman Covington. Joe graduated from NC State with a degree in Product Design and served as the Art Director on the Design School’s magazine called Windover. Joe was a commercial graphics instructor at Randolph Community College for 28 years where he also taught life drawing. He was a member of the committee who lobbied the legislature to bring the NC Zoo to Randolph County.
He had many interests. He was an avid photographer who focused on hummingbirds. He also loved all kinds of music, although his favorites were jazz and classical. He was also an artist, often painting landscapes in oils. Joe was a real cat lover and could easily tame stray cats. He loved tennis and played as often as he could. Joe was interested in cars, specifically their design. All in all, people always said Joe was a good, decent man.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, John Shore and nephew, Michael Shore. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda Sockwell Covington; sister, Rebecca “Becky” Covington Shore; brother, Robert Covington (Lezlie); and sisters-in-law, Carla Sockwell Morgan and Sheryl “Sherry” Heath.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 4, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, NC 27203. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 6, 2025 at 3:00 pm at the Episcopel Church of the Good Shepherd, 505 Mountain Rd., Asheboro, NC 27205.
