Janice Poindexter Simmons, age 60, of Seagrove, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025, at UNC Hillsborough Hospice.
Janice was born on April 27, 1965, in Randolph County, to the late Charles Poindexter and Donna Swaney.
Janice was a loving and selfless woman whose greatest joy came from her family. She enjoyed reading and loved the quiet life, but her world revolved around her children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was strong, determined, and always ready to help anyone in need. Her mischievous sense of humor and caring spirit made her a light to those around her. She loved spontaneous adventures—often surprising her daughters with trips to the beach—and cherished time spent in the mountains.
Janice was deeply supportive and endlessly proud of her family. She was the kind of person who would fight for anyone going through hard times and never hesitated to give the shirt off her back. A lifelong learner, she earned her master’s degree in nursing and was just one class away from completing her doctorate. She also shared her knowledge as a nursing instructor at Randolph Community College, inspiring many through her compassion and dedication to teaching.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Poindexter.
Janice is survived by her mother, Donna Poindexter; her children, Donna Simmons Bishop, Crystal Simmons Trexler, and Micheal William Simmons; and her beloved grandchildren, Alexandria Trexler and Jessa Simmons. She is also survived by her siblings, Charlie Poindexter and Kimberly Rutkowski; and nieces and nephews, Amber Baucom, Addison Baucom, Avary Baucom, Alexa Baucom, Jason Poindexter, Ron Rutkowski, Daniel Poindexter, and Preston Rutkowski.
Janice will be remembered for her kind heart, unwavering strength, and the love she gave so freely to everyone she met.
