George H. Stein Jr.

George H. Stein Jr., 87, of Asheboro, NC passed away on June 16, 2026.

He was born on March 13, 1939, to the late George H. Stein Sr. and Elizabeth Boughton Stein in Harrisburg, PA. There he attended John Harris High School, where he was an excellent student. He played both piano and trumpet and was also a skilled tennis player, serving as captain of the tennis team.

George went on to study medicine and philosophy at Haverford College, then continued his studies at Union Theological Seminary. He was ordained as a minister in 1964 and served congregations of the United Church of Christ, first in Hagerstown, MD and later in Winchester, VA.

Later in life, George moved to Charlotte, NC to be closer to family. There he became an active member of the Charlotte Friends Meeting. He enjoyed visiting with relatives across the country and Canada. George had an appreciation for and regularly enjoyed visits to the symphony and theater.

George spent his final years at the Terra Bella retirement community in Asheboro, where he formed close friendships, led Bible studies, and looked forward to shared meals and activities with fellow residents.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara S. Kumar and brother-in-law Brad Heinzen. He is survived by his sister Charlotte S. Heinzen of Jamestown, brother Douglas Stein and his wife Carola Marte of Bethany, CT and brother-in-law Raj Kumar of Charlotte. He was a beloved uncle to three nieces, three grandnieces and two grandnephews.

George will be remembered fondly for his ever-calm presence, the ease with which he was able to converse with and learn from those he spent time with, his quickness to find and enjoy the humor in a situation when decorum allowed and his tremendous attention to detail. George was exceptionally humble, unusually modest and always considerate. He will be missed by many.

The family will host private memorial services at a later date. Donations in George’s honor may be made to the Charlotte Friends Meeting.
