Dr. Thomas A Kornegay, age 83, of 504 N Main St, Troy died Sunday, February 7, 2010 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst. Dr. Kornegay was born July 20, 1926 in Raleigh, NC the son of Joseph Millard and Mae Louise (Cooper) Kornegay. He moved to Smithfield, NC at the age of 1 and grew up there. He attended and graduated from Smithfield Elementary, Smithfield Jr. High School and Smithfield Sr. High School. He married Frances Nance September 22 1956 at Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he had served as a past president of the Clyde Nance Methodist Men's Class, an usher, a 1990 Lay Person of the Year in the Sanford District and served as Chairman of the Board and other various capacities since 1954. He was a 1948 pre-med graduate of Wake Forest College. He graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery and was licensed to practice dentistry in 1952. He was a member of the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery "Odontological Society". He was a member of Troy Rotary Club with the most years of service and was awarded a special merit award for "Program least likely to be forgotten." He was the club president in 1988 and awarded the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was a licensed pilot in general aviation, owned a Champion Citabria acrobatic airplane and loved flying his friends and flying to the coast to fish. He was co-owner of Susanna Frances Kornegay Furniture (SFK)- Boutique Porch Swings from 2000 to the present. He enjoyed wood working, turning wood on a lathe and producing many pieces of unique furniture throughout his life. He loved golfing with his friends at Montgomery Country Club.. He served on the Board of Directors of the Montgomery County Health Department from May, 1972 - November, 1996. He loved his cats and dogs. He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1944-1945 and awarded an honorable discharge at the end of World War II where after his service he was granted the GI Bill which enabled him to attend college. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Joseph Millard Kornegay and Robert Cooper Kornegay. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances Nance Kornegay of the home; one son: Thomas A. Kornegay, Jr. and wife, Stephanie of Troy; granddaughter, Susanna Kornegay of Troy and grandson, Andy Darrohn, also of Troy. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday at 1:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 239 N. Russell Street, Troy with Rev. Bobby Tyson, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to Trinity Fund c/o Trinity United Methodist Church, 239 N.
