"Dr. George Benton Lutman, 86, of Greensboro, NC, passed away January 14 after a brief illness. He was born September 3, 1939, in Versailles, MO to Claud and Winifred Lutman.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by Loretta, his beloved wife of 61 years.
George is survived by his brother Robert Lutman (Sharon) of California, sister Shirley Lewis (Jerry) of Kansas, son, Denis (Sarah), and daughters, Greta (David), Alice (Bingo & Matilda), Ingrid (Jerry), and Bridget (Timmy) all of North Carolina, as well as many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
George was an Eagle Scout and graduate of Versailles High School. He attended the University of Missouri, Columbia, becoming a medical doctor and pathologist. While in medical school he met the love of his life, Loretta Heffner, who was a nursing student. They were married in 1963.
George entered the US Army in 1969 and served in Vietnam as a member of the Battle Damage Assessment Reporting Team.
George settled his family in Fayetteville, NC where he became a pathologist at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital.
George had a lifelong interest in music and art, spending much of his time practicing and painting. He also had a deep respect for and interest in religion.
George was a wonderful husband, brother, father and friend, and a true light on this earth. He will be missed dearly.
The Lutman family expresses their sincere appreciation for the love and support provided by his friends in Asheboro, Harmony Senior Living in Greensboro, and friends and relatives around the world.
Memorial services will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Asheboro, NC on Saturday, March 28 at 11am.
The family appreciates flowers, donations to a favorite charity or to the monks Walking For Peace from Texas to Washington."
