Carolyn Dantzler “Dan” Frazer Lewallen, 92, went home to be with her Lord on May 28th, 2022. There will be a committal service held Saturday, June 4th at 1:00 pm at Oaklawn Cemetery, 737 Albemarle Rd, Asheboro, NC 27203. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall at the church following the funeral service.
Dantzler was born on January 11th, 1930 in Lafayette, Alabama, the youngest of the children of the late Eley Cappleman Frazer Jr. and Carolyn Weeks Frazer. In addition to her parents, Dantzler was preceded in death by her husband Joseph C. Lewallen, and brother, Eley C. Frazer III.
Dan grew up in Alabama and Florida. She graduated from high school while living in Montgomery, Alabama. She attended the University of Florida earning a Bachelor of Science in Horticultural Science with a minor in Voice in 1952. While at the University, she sang in the Glee Club, was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and was a member of the ballroom dancing society. After graduation, she was unable to find work. No one would hire a woman to do horticultural work. Dan having been raised on a farm and accustomed to doing her share of the chores, wanted to work in landscaping or in a greenhouse. Instead she accepted a scholarship to Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia and earned her Masters in Christian Education. Upon completing her Masters in 1954, she was called to serve as the Director of Christian Education at the First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro, NC. There she met her future husband, Joseph Lewallen. They married on April 6, 1956. They had three daughters, Carolyn, Sarah, and Mary. When her daughters were young, she chose to stay home with them until the youngest entered school. She began her teaching career at Franklinville Elementary School where she taught for two years. In 1971, she joined the faculty at Ramseur Elementary where she taught exceptional children, those with learning disabilities, until she retired in 1995. After retirement, she continued to volunteer for Ramseur Elementary for over 15 years. She was active in the Randolph County Retired Teachers Association and in the Beta Nu chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa Society. In addition, she was active in the local Gardening club, Extension Homemakers, and the Stephen Ministries.
Dan was a faithful believer in Christ. She was a very active member of First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, lead bible studies, worked with the youth fellowship, the children’s programs, and was an active member of Presbyterian Women. She was honored with Life Membership in Presbyterian Women in 1981.
Dan is survived by her three daughters, Carolyn Langley (Phil), Sarah Lewallen (Mark Bandy), and Mary Withers (Jim); grandson Dan Withers (Sarah Beth), and granddaughter Austin Langley (Tim Brady); great granddaughters, Hattie, and Margot Withers; one brother Bill Frazer; nieces, Terri Darden, Tami Robison, Tina Buchner, Traci Martin, Miriam Howard, and nephew Dantz Frazer, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews and one great, great niece and nephew.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Asheboro or to a charity of your choice.
