Carl Elijah Sheffield, age 96, of Liberty passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at his home.
Mr. Sheffield was born in Randolph County on December 29, 1924 to Lewis Ransom and Ruby Strider Sheffield. He graduated from Asheboro High School before serving his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was stationed in Naples, Rome, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. After serving his country, he graduated from NC State majoring in Textiles, Chemistry, and Dyeing. He retired as a Chemist after working 30 years with Cone Mills. Carl was a baptized member of Balfour Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Della Mozelle Lewis Sheffield and son-in-law, Mel Coke.
Carl had a warm and friendly personality with a hearty laugh that made everyone around him feel at ease and relaxed. He loved being around his family and friends. He had a passion for cars, tools, and good food.
He is survived by daughters, Judy A. Coke of Manchester TN and Pamela J. Wolfe and husband Dr. NC Wolfe of Asheboro; son, Young L. Sheffield and wife Karen Sheffield of Greensboro; 8 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren; and special family friend, Bill Sheffield.
The family would like to give individual recognition to care providers Carolyn Hardage and Andrea Holland for their compassionate and consistent care. And gratitude to Rosemary Williams, a very kind and gentle CNA, the nursing staff, Chaplain Tim and all social services staff members of Hospice of Randolph.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 2:00 at Oaklawn Cemetery, 737 Albemarle Road in Asheboro with Rev. Doug Hefner officiating and with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
