Billy Joe Kellis, age 93, of Troy, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
Bill was born in Troy to the late James Madison "Bud" Kellis and the late Helen Ragsdale Kellis on July 3, 1932. Bill was a life-long member of First Methodist Church in Troy, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years.
After high school, Bill served in the U.S. Army, service for which he was very proud. He trained at the Army's Guided Missile School in Fort Bliss TX and at White Sands, NM. He then went to Fort Hancock, NJ where he was on the operational team for one of the first Nike Missile sites protecting New York City.
Bill worked for many years in manufacturing at Capel Rug where he served as the supervisor over the sewing department. After retirement he wanted to remain active and became a courier for First Bank of Troy.
Bill had a long-time love for Duke University, a love he passed down to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Hamilton Kellis, and his sister Walser Mae "Tink" Luther. Bill and Shirley were inseparable during their marriage, and he greatly mourned her after her passing.
He is survived by his sons: Mike Kellis (Donna) of Weaverville, NC, and David Kellis (Tina) of Troy; five grandchildren: Lauren Ackermann (Jeff) of Lansing MI, Jamie Kellis (Steven) of Mt. Gilead, Megan Kellis of Durham, NC, Melinda Kellis (Randy) of Savannah, GA, and Derrick Phelps of Green Bay WI, plus ten great grandchildren.
Special thanks go to Bobby and Loretta Morris who provided much care for Bill after Shirley's passing.
