Betty Jane Gibbs LaGrange October 11, 1925 — January 4, 2026 Asheboro
Betty Jane Gibbs LaGrange, 100, of Asheboro, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Randolph Hospice House. She was born October 11, 1925, in Albany County, NY, to Harry Benjamin Gibbs and Vertie Vianna Clow.
Betty grew up in the Hilderberg Mountain village of Knox, New York, as the youngest of five children on a self-sustainable family farm. She graduated from Bern-Knox High School in 1943 and married the love of her life, Wallace Sidney “Sid” LaGrange, in 1944. Betty was a woman of many talents and a strong work ethic; she served as a homemaker, a school bus driver for the New York school system, and eventually retired from the New York State Tax Department in 1983. In 1996, Betty and Sid moved to Asheboro to be closer to their family.
Known locally as the "Butterfly Lady," Betty had a passion for creating butterflies from discarded calendars, which can be found in homes and businesses across the country. She was a woman of unwavering faith who attended First Baptist Church in Asheboro and spent time each day in worship and devotion. Betty was remarkably independent even at 100 years old—driving her car, cooking from scratch, and staying connected with loved ones through her computer and cell phone. Her life was a testament to hard work, respect for others, and a deep love for God.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Sidney “Sid” LaGrange; her daughters, Lois (Tom) Deck and Barbara (Dennis) Moak; her sons, Richard (Glenis) LaGrange and Ronnie LaGrange; and her three brothers James, Francis and Alton and sister Eunice.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Lagrange of St. Petersburg, FL; her son, Robert LaGrange (Cindy) of Ashland, MA; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Asheboro with Pastor Stephen Owens and Pastor Michael Thames officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
