Barbara Jean Christley Slater Loyd passed away, with her family at her side, on May 19, 2021, in Asheboro.
Barbara was born in Draper, NC (now known as Eden, NC) on October 3, 1929, daughter of
Howard Joseph Christley and Gaynelle Jones Christley. She was preceded in death by husband Fleming Loyd, brother Howard Christley, and sister Mary Rawicz.
Barbara was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a graduate of Hollingsworth Comptometer school and Randolph Community College, and retired from Burlington Industries. Barbara was very active in her community and was known for her delicious deviled eggs. She volunteered with her church, Randolph Hospital, Randolph Community Concerts, Our Daily Bread, Clapps Nursing Home, and Special Olympics. She also bowled with the Ladies Coffee League and Senior Rollers and was an avid and loyal Asheboro Copperheads baseball fan.
In her retirement years, Barbara became a world traveler. She roamed the USA with her bowling team, visited family in numerous states, and traveled to London, Paris, the French Wine Region, and Germany. Her ride under the English Channel on a train from London to Paris was one of the more unique experiences of her later years. While she declined the elevator trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower and the stairwell climb to the bell in Notre Dame, she made new friends while enjoying the scenery from street level.
She is survived by sons Kyle Slater (Liz) and Louis Loyd (Jenny), grandsons James Loyd (Molly) and Chris Loyd (Spencer), great grandson Jackson Loyd, sister-in-law Doris Christley, nephew Joe Christley, nieces Karen Hanner, Jeri Jones, and Karla, Daniella, Michelle and Kristina Rawicz.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 10:00-11:00 am at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro. Services will follow on Wednesday at 11:00 am in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Randolph County.
